- REGISTRATION LEVELS AND PROCEDURES
-
- The Illustrated Reader is shareware, a method of software
- marketing that lets you, the customer, try programs before you
- buy them. (Shareware is explained in greater detail later.)
- Upon receipt of this software, you have an evaluation license
- good for 30 days to see if you want to keep it. If you decide
- to keep it, please pay for it by "registering" your copy. You
- can register the IR at three levels: User ($10), Author ($30)
- and Proprietary (negotiated royalty). Your registration level
- depends on how you intend to use the program. Each level will
- be described below, along with a description of shareware, and
- some other legalese. A ready-to-print registration form is also
- included in this document. Press the END key to go directly to
- this form.
-
- The User Level ($10)
-
- At this level, the IR is licensed to you for your own personal
- use. You may use it to read files and you may create your own
- illustrated documents, as long as you do not sell them for profit.
- For example, a teacher could use the IR to create lessons students
- would use in his/her classroom. This level is mainly intended for
- people who want to use the IR to read electronic books written for
- the IR. At this level you receive a permanent user's license, and
- a Tea Time Registration Certificate which entitles you to a 20%
- discount when you register any other Tea Time programs such as TYPE
- TREK or WORDTRIX!. You are also automatically notified of updates,
- and can update to the next version at greatly reduced rates.
-
- Finally, if you register at the User level, then decide later
- that you want to register at the Author level, you can send in the
- difference. Just be sure to mention that you are already registered
- at the User level.
-
- The Author Level ($30)
-
- If you would like to create illustrated books, manuals or other
- documents intended to be used with the Illustrated Reader, and you
- want to market these documents through shareware, then you should
- register at the Author level. Registered Authors receive a number
- of benefits which include:
-
- (1) The right to distribute their works as intended for use
- with the Illustrated Reader, and to charge a fee for the
- use of these works. Authors do NOT have to pay royalties
- to Tea Time Software, but they may not alter, reverse
- engineer, or in any way interfere with the appearance or
- operation of the Illustrated Reader.
-
- (2) Authors may distribute the IR with their documents, and offer
- their customers a reduced User Level registration of $7.00 for
- the IR when they register or pay for the electronic document.
- (Both Tea Time Software and the IR Authors should benefit from
- this arrangement. It provides Authors' customers an incentive
- to register their works, as well as increases the number of IR
- registrations. Authors must forward the IR registration portion
- to Tea Time Software, of course.)
-
- (3) Authors also receive a supplemental hardcopy author's manual
- with additional hints, tricks and suggestions for creating
- and marketing electronic books. In addition, they receive a
- copy of DRAWING.COM, a program to create graphic with extended
- ASCII characters. (again, no programming necessary), hardcopy
- charts for locating screen pages and positioning graphic images,
- and copies of shareware and public domain utilities that can
- greatly facilitate authoring projects.
-
- (4) Authors also receive the 20% discount on any other Tea Time
- product, and reduced upgrade prices on future versions of
- The Illustrated Reader.
-
- If you decide to register at the Author Level, in addition to the
- "goodies" listed above, you will be sent an agreement to sign that
- spells out in more detail the distribution and registration arrange-
- ments.
-
- Proprietary Level (by special arrangement)
-
- There are some situations that may require altering the IR soft-
- ware, that is, the creation of a proprietary version of the reader
- program for your needs. One example would be an electronic magazine.
- As of this writing, one such proprietary agreement is in the works,
- for a magazine produced by a well-known shareware author. These
- arrangements will probably involve royalties and need to be worked
- out through negotiation between Tea Time Software and the intended
- author(s)/publisher(s). If you are seriously considering such an
- arrangement, contact Joe Kretschmer at Tea Time Software at the
- address on the registration form (also at the end of the MANUAL.DOC
- file.

-
- What is Shareware?
-
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
- before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using
- it, you are expected to register. Copyright laws apply to both
- shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains
- all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Share-
- ware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
- authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases,
- there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the
- method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to
- copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
- specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
- before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
-
- Disclaimer
-
- Users of The Illustrated Reader must accept this disclaimer:
-
- "The Illustrated Reader is supplied as is. The author disclaims
- all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
- the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
- The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential,
- which may result from the use of The Illustrated Reader."
-
- License Agreement
-
- The Illustrated Reader is a "shareware program" and is
- provided at no charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free
- to share it with your friends, but please do not give it away
- altered or as part of another system. The essence of "user-
- supported" software is to provide personal computer users with
- quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
- incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products.
- If you find this program useful and find that you are using The
- Illustrated Reader and continue to use The Illustrated Reader
- after a reasonable trial period, you must make a registration
- payment to Tea Time Software. The registration fee will license
- one copy for use on any one computer at any one time. You must
- treat this software just like a book. An example is that this
- software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved
- from one computer location to another, so long as there is no
- possibility of it being used at one location while it's being used
- at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons
- at the same time. Commercial site-License arrangements may be made
- by contacting Tea Time Software directly.
-
- Anyone distributing The Illustrated Reader for any kind of
- remuneration must first contact Tea Time Software at the address
- below for authorization. Authorization is automatically granted to
- distributors recognized by the Association of Shareware Professionals
- as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such
- distributors may begin offering The Illustrated Reader immediately.
- (However, Tea Time Software must still be advised so that the dis-
- tributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest version.
-
- ASP Ombudsman Statement
-
- This program is produced by a member of the Association of
- Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the
- shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
- shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member
- directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you re-
- solve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide
- technical support for members' products. Please write to the ASP
- Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe
- message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.
